Friends of the POC Library: How do The Friends of the Port O’Connor Library Branch, a non-profit service organization, enhance our community? Some of the methods are securing materials that are beyond the ordinary budget of the library and recruiting volunteers to supplement paid staff for special events or programs at the library. We welcome all who share our goals and vision to become a member or volunteer at any time of the year.

February’s Children’s Program was such a heartwarming event! It’s wonderful to see children expressing their creativity and love for their library branch. And big kudos to the volunteers and the Friends group for their dedication in making the program a success. It’s through their support and efforts that these community events thrive and bring joy to everyone involved. Fun Fact: February is “I Love My Library Month.

Super Saturdays Children’s Program on March 2nd was also very exciting! It offered games and fun for the children who attended. They had a fabulous time with crafts, snacks and games.

The folks who attended the Adult Program at the Port O’Connor Library Branch joined Daniel Emery for an evening of discussion about beekeeping. They well understood the meaning of “bee” there or “bee” square. Mr. Emery shared fascinating and incredibly important information about how bees contributed to our ecosystem. He related much about his vast knowledge about bee behavior, hive management, and the intricate workings of these remarkable insects.

His six beehives contribute to pollination, and he harvests honey. Some lucky people won sweet door prizes – honey! Many thanks to Daniel Emery for presenting an interesting and informative program on Beekeeping as a Hobby. Our community is certainly enriched by such programs.

Childrens’ Christmas Program at the Library

December Spotlight

How is it already December? One blink and Halloween and Thanksgiving were over! Need a gift idea?

Folks generally love gift cards. Gift a friend or relative with a FREE library card. It can fit snugly in a cell phone case or wallet. It might be easy to take for granted, but it is very powerful. Bring your friends and family to the library and sign up anyone who needs a lifetime of entertainment! Whether you have lived here for decades or are visiting for a short time, you can get a library card and use resources on-site and online. Visit the circulation desk to get started. While you are there, take part in one or all of our events.

An Adult Program was held on November 20th. What an eclectic night of poems and readings! Topics ranged from snails, whales, hummingbirds, original poetry about war and another about Christmas and Crime, dispatching for 9-11 to Jimmy Buffet and Shakespeare. Folks agreed that Poetry Night was quite a success and look forward to the next time!

Many thanks to our December Donors & Volunteers.

Per the wishes of the contenders of Beacon 44’s Fourth Annual Cornhole Tournament, proceeds will be used to benefit the Children’s Program. We appreciate your generosity!

It is amazing when the community comes together to create a Winter Wonderland with actual snow foam. Jessica Pelzel said it best, “I want to challenge all my friends and family to go out and visit your local library to see what all they have to offer and try to get involved! We’ve had the pleasure of being part of one of the best county libraries in Port O’Connor that has kids programs, adult programs, weekly coffee and conversation, and outstanding community outreach. So much Halloween fun was had at the October Children’s Program. We played Bingo, tried not to drop the “eyeball” from the Spoon Race, participated in Spider Toss, Hat Toss, and a Bean Bag Toss. We pinned the Spider on the Web, too. We collected points while having fun, fun, fun!

On November 4th another Children’s Program took place with numerous Thanksgiving crafts! We started with Thanksgiving Bingo and had centers for creating turkey headbands, woven placemats, Thanksgiving wreaths, and coloring mats with cool markers.

1:00-3:30 PM – Mah Jongg – Fun Facts: Although both skill and chance play a fundamental role in the game, there is no shortage of superstitions in which players believe where they sit, how they hold their pieces or objects they have on their person will somehow affect the outcome. For example, players will try to find seats with the best feng shui or wear their lucky clothing or trinkets. Some believe that specific pieces (one dot, for example) bode bad luck if received in their opening hand.

Thursdays: 1:00-3:30 PM – Bridge – Playing Bridge evokes a range of emotions; despair when you lose a hand, triumph when you win, satisfaction when a hand plays out the way you imagined. Many truly believe it is the world’s greatest game!

The Friends collaborate closely with the library to help support the needs of the community and meet the needs of library management. Our library offers something for everyone, so check it out!

The Children’s 2023-2024 Program commenced on the 9th of the month, and everyone had a wonderful time at the library. The fun started with Bingo and moved onto the twenty-three station Scavenger Hunt that included indoor and outdoor stations. The focus of the game was to place items at various spots to familiarize hunters with different points of interest and special areas. Did you know about these interesting items and locations at our library? Just a few of them are a cannon used by the Navy; a replica of a tugboat; an outside statue of children reading on a bench; a butterfly garden; a fabulous children’s area; and a newspaper and magazine sitting area. After the hunt was over, children took their bags of treasures and created quite the artistic masterpieces. Our kids are the best! The Friends of the Port O Connor Library host a Children’s Program one Saturday a month from 10:00-11:30.
Be sure to mark your calendar and save the date for the next Super Saturdays Children’s Programs: October 21st, Fun for Fall, and November 4th, Thanksgiving Crafts and Games.

March Spotlight

We are so pleased to announce that a special friend to our library, Mary Ann Claiborne, was honored with a declaration by Calhoun County Judge Richard R. Meyer proclaiming February 15th Mary Ann Claiborne Day.

Another shout-out to Susan Wallace for her generous donation to the POC Library Branch! Proceeds were used to purchase a table and chairs to accommodate those large puzzles, the game that tests ingenuity. In addition, these proceeds made it possible to purchase a console for the Multipurpose Room and new toys for the Kid’s Corner. Please drop by and check out these gifts to our community.

Speaking of donations, our community came together to help a family in need. Tragedy struck the Stovall family and they lost most of their belongings in a house fire. Fellow librarian Debbie Stovall works for the main library in Port Lavaca. The Port O’Connor Service Club donated clothing items and the POC Library Branch collected financial donations for the family. We have such a generous and resourceful community!

Friends of the POC Library:

On March 2nd, The Friends were actively involved, along with students, parents, faculty and staff and other community members, at the Port O’Connor Elementary School’s Open House and Book Fair. The Friends supported literacy and a love of reading by donating $10 to every student on campus and $20 to classroom teachers to buy books at the book fair.
